W06: ICCC 2019 Workshop on QoE-driven Multimedia Communications

Scope and Topics of the Workshop

With the explosion of new multimedia applications (e.g. video conferencing and 360°video) witnessed in the past decades, the multimedia communication has become significantly prominent in wireless networks, affecting the daily life of billions of citizens and millions of businesses in the world. The amount of multimedia data traffic going over wireless networks is expected to grow 40-fold over the next five years. Therefore, the metrics on evaluating the performance of multimedia communication are urgently needed. However, the traditional metrics focus on quality of service (QoS), ignoring the human perception on multimedia. Instead, quality of experience (QoE), as emerged evaluation metrics, take into account the performance of multimedia communications from the perspective of human. Since human is the ultimate of the multimedia services, QoE is more reasonable than QoS, as it targets at the perception mechanism of human.

For management and design of future networks with multimedia services, three issues need to be addressed. First, a mechanism that analyzes the content of multimedia is in demand, where the QoE-embedded information can be abstracted and represented, during which, real-time QoE monitoring solutions should be used. Second, processing methods including source coding, channel coding, modulation, detection, and resource management need to be alternatively designed to fit the representation of QoE-embedded information. This is reasonable because QoE-embedded data, such as still images or video streams, are highly correlated in both spatial and temporal domains. Third, the processed data that contains QoE-embedded information should be given higher priority for utilizing radio resources, while the data that have little influence on QoE should use less resources. To further improve the quality of transmission, we may consider QoE as an important criterion in future communication systems, especially in wireless multimedia communications, and propose new processing methodologies that match the QoE-embedded representation.

This workshop provides a forum for scholars from academia and industry to exchange their ideas and new results on the research of QoE-driven multimedia communications. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • QoE-driven resource allocation and management
  • QoE-based network management and design
  • QoE-driven video coding
  • Sentiment analysis in QoE
  • QoE-based cooperative computing networks
  • QoE-aware cross-layer design
  • Evaluation of QoE in QoS constrained communications
  • QoE relation and mapping to QoS
  • QoE for cloud service and infrastructure management
  • Cognitive networks with QoE
  • QoE monitoring solution in communications
Submission Guideline

The submitted papers should be original, not published or current under review for publications in any other journal or conference. All submission must be formatted in standard IEEE camera-ready format and must be written in English and be at most six (6) printed papers in length, including figures.
